The Health Myth Exposed
In 1895 the Journal of the American Medical Association reportedly noted that U.S. doctors lived only about 55 years on average – roughly two decades less than other Americans. A century later, Dr. Joel D. Wallach (a veterinarian-turned-naturopath) revisited these statistics and was surprised that physicians still seemed to die relatively young (he cited figures of about 58–69 years versus a general U.S. average of ~75.5). Wallach used this irony to argue that even medical doctors weren’t following truly healthful practices, since they had “unlimited access” to care yet died early. (In contrast, a 2025 JAMA study actually found that U.S. physicians now have lower age-adjusted mortality than non-health workers, indicating that modern doctors generally live longer than the average, not shorter.) Nevertheless, the claim remains a striking anecdote that has been used to question conventional medical wisdom.
Wallach’s insight into this puzzle came from a career as a zoo and farm veterinarian. Over decades he performed over 17,500 animal autopsies (on 454 different species) alongside thousands of human autopsies. He noticed that livestock and zoo animals must be kept healthy through prevention, because there is no “insurance” for a sick animal – farmers cannot afford endless vet care. In one telling example Wallach argued that if pets or livestock were insured like people, a beefburger would cost on the order of $275 per pound to cover medical costs. Economically, farmers learned that supplying minerals in animal feed prevents many diseases before they start. By contrast, Wallach contends, human medicine often ignores such prevention.
Among the veterinary cases Wallach cites are classic deficiency diseases. For instance, white muscle disease in lambs and calves – a muscular degeneration – is reliably prevented by selenium (and vitamin E) supplementation. Similarly, research suggests that chromium (and sometimes vanadium) can improve blood sugar regulation in diabetic dogs. (For example, one veterinary review noted that giving diabetic dogs about 100 μg/day of chromium yeast helped lower their blood glucose, and vanadium compounds also lower blood sugar.) Intriguingly, Wallach also recounted an episode at NIH where he found pancreatic lesions in a monkey resembling cystic fibrosis and attributed them to selenium deficiency, claiming a cure for CF (a disorder then considered genetic). This claim was not accepted by medical authorities – the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation quickly labeled his hypothesis “unproven”. In the end, Wallach left NIH (he says he was fired) and went into naturopathic practice, frustrated that dietary mineral cures were dismissed because they threatened existing research and profits.

Examples of veterinary nutrient cures: White muscle disease in sheep/goats is caused by selenium (±vitamin E) deficiency. Wallach summarizes his veterinary work by asserting: “Every human being or animal that dies of ‘natural causes’ dies of a nutritional deficiency”. In other words, he believes that diseases like diabetes or heart failure are really deficiency syndromes (e.g. “diabetes is chromium/vanadium deficiency” or “cardiomyopathy is selenium deficiency”). This view is controversial, but there is scientific evidence that low trace mineral status can contribute to disease. For example, researchers have found that selenium deficiency is associated with certain heart diseases – people with higher blood selenium had a markedly lower risk of developing heart failure and death. And animal studies (see above) suggest chromium and vanadium can influence diabetes. Wallach argues the medical community simply labels such deaths as generic “organ failure” instead of nutrient lack.
Longevity Myths in Isolated Populations
Wallach and others have long promoted stories of remote mountain peoples living far beyond normal lifespans. He cited various highland cultures (the “eight long-lived cultures”) whose elders were said to reach ages like 120–140 years – even 256 years by some claims. These include Himalayan Tibetans, the Hunza of Pakistan, Georgian/Armenian highlanders in the Caucasus, the Vilcabamba valley people of Ecuador, the Quechua around Lake Titicaca, etc.. Their common trait, according to this lore, was drinking “glacial milk” – glacier-fed stream water rich in finely-ground rock minerals. Proponents showed that boiling such water leaves far more mineral residue than typical bottled water.
However, modern research has largely debunked the extremes of these longevity tales. Careful demographic studies found no verified cases of extraordinary age in Vilcabamba or the Hunza beyond what public records show. For example, a 1982 human biology study of Vilcabamba, Ecuador found that supposed 130+ year lifespans were due to age exaggeration; corrected life tables showed their longevity is actually similar or slightly below U.S. values. And recent reports on the Hunza note that documented life expectancy is around 100–120 years at most, with no credible evidence of multi-century lifespans.
That said, nutritionists do note that these mountain groups tend to avoid processed foods and often eat lots of fresh produce (e.g. apricots) and may have social and lifestyle factors (exercise, community bonds) that support health. The idea of mineral-rich glacier water is a popular theory: researchers have speculated that water heavy in trace elements could play a role. For instance, one review on Hunza longevity cites the hypothesis of “water that’s loaded with minerals” as a potential factor in their health. In reality, glacial melt does carry fine rock particles, but whether this materially affects human nutrition is unproven. (The diets of these groups also differ in many ways: they tend to consume mostly unprocessed plant foods and engage in daily physical labor.)
“Glacial milk” theory: These mountain communities often source drinking and irrigation water from glacial streams. Such water can appear cloudy (“glacial milk”) because it contains suspended mineral rock flour. One hypothesis is that over centuries this could supply a spectrum of trace minerals that modern diets lack. (However, it’s unclear how much mineral nutrition comes directly from the water versus from local produce grown in it.)
In short, while these isolated groups can be remarkably healthy by some measures, academic studies do not support claims that they routinely live to 140+ years. The more likely story is a combination of good diet, exercise, low pollution, and modest lifestyles, rather than any singular “fountain-of-youth” element.
Soil Depletion and “Four Food Groups”
A central pillar of Wallach’s argument is that modern agriculture has stripped soils of minerals, so our food no longer provides what it once did. In fact, the 1936 U.S. Senate Document 264 (by Dr. Charles Northen) warned that farm soils were becoming depleted of trace elements. That report stated bluntly that “Laboratory tests prove that the fruits, vegetables, [and] grains…of today are not what they were a few generations ago”, since many elements are missing. One passage noted that no one could possibly eat enough fruits and vegetables to get all needed minerals because the soil was so poor.
A later environmental conference (the 1992 U.N. Rio Summit) also highlighted global soil nutrient loss, particularly from intensive farming and erosion. Some authors quote from that era the figure that North American agricultural soils have lost over 80% of their original mineral content. (For example, an advocacy article states “the 1992 Earth Summit soil mineral depletion report showed North American soils [about] 85% depleted”.) While exact numbers can vary, experts agree that continuous monoculture and reliance on chemical fertilizers have reduced levels of elements like selenium, zinc, and copper in many regions.
Because plants can only absorb the minerals present in soil, depleted earth means less nutrition in crops. This is why Wallach and others argue that simply eating “the four food groups” is no longer sufficient. The US government’s historical dietary guidelines (fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins/dairy) assume those foods are nutrient-rich. But if the soil has been mined of its minerals, then those foods may not contain all the cofactors needed for health. (Modern studies do show mild declines in some nutrient levels in produce, though fortified foods and supplements also mitigate some gaps.) In Wallach’s view, the failure of doctors and public health officials to acknowledge this mineral depletion is a fatal flaw.
Economic and Industry Factors
Wallach claims that acknowledging nutritional causes of disease would “collapse a trillion-dollar industry” of healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Indeed, healthcare (especially in the US) is a multitrillion-dollar sector, with massive investment in drugs and procedures. From Wallach’s perspective, as long as medicine treats chronic illnesses with medications and surgeries (managing symptoms), there is a financial incentive not to promote cheap nutrient prevention. He points out a striking contrast: farmers insist on complete mineral supplementation for animals because even one case of, say, selenium-deficient white muscle disease (or retained placenta) can ruin a herd. Humans, on the other hand, have been told for decades that “you can get everything you need from the four food groups” – advice he sees as a “lie” that allows underlying deficiencies to quietly cause diseases like arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, etc.
The result, in Wallach’s narrative, is that doctors end up prescribing pills rather than pills being replaced by minerals. He even notes the irony that physicians themselves who ignored supplementation often suffered early deaths, providing a “dead doctors don’t lie” proof of the system’s failure. For example, he quotes staggering claims that physicians average only 58–69 years old, despite their knowledge. (Again, modern data do not support this for today’s doctors, but it highlights the motif that “experts” aren’t immune to the diseases of modern life.)
Ultimately, Wallach argues it would cost only pennies a day in minerals to meet human needs – the same minerals already added to animal feeds – and that could extend healthy lifespan well past 100. He concludes that the truth of nutritional health was accidentally found (in veterinary and remote-culture observations) but suppressed by the medical establishment, and he encourages readers to start supplementing minerals immediately to prevent deficiency diseases.

In summary, this perspective holds that investing in simple mineral and nutrient supplementation (the same way farmers enrich animal feed) could dramatically improve human health and longevity. By reframing many diseases as avoidable deficiency syndromes, it challenges conventional medicine’s emphasis on pharmaceuticals. Whether one accepts Wallach’s extreme claims or not, his thesis underscores the importance of nutrition and how agricultural practices affect it – a point that even mainstream science now acknowledges through studies on soil health and nutrient gaps.
